Vogue
Vogueing originating from African American and Latino queer communities in the ballrooms of Harlem, New York in the 1970’s. Vogue is an intricate dance act inspired by the poses featured on the covers of Vogue fashion magazine.
There are 3 difference styles of Vogue:
Old Way – the origins of Voguing which emphasised solid lines, symmetry, and strong poses that drew inspiration from models, fashion magazines and martial arts.
New Way – this style came after Old Way when people with more varied abilities (contortionists, gymnasts and ballerinas) joined the ballroom scene. New Way is characterized by haute couture fashion poses with more flexibility, geometric pattern movement, and illusions with arms, wrists and hands.
Vogue Femme – this style was introduced when femme queens (trans women) embody an extremely feminine appearance and movement through their Vogue. Vogue Femme is known for the five elements: Hands Performance, Catwalk, Duckwalk, Spins & Dips and Floor Performance.
This class will introduce students to Vogue, it’s history and culture. In class, we will focus on Vogue elements, techniques, poses, and individual personality within the Vogue style. This class will primarily focus on Femme and New Way. Students will also learn a Vogue choreography incorporating all elements of Vogue with the goal of students to later be able to express themselves freely through a Vogue freestyle.
